"Before it was even daylight, people climbed out of bed, put on an extra
layer of clothing, and drove downtown to witness what looked like the movie
set of a disaster film. Armed with cameras and thermoses, 4,000 spectators,
according to police estimates, shivered and waited for the biggest and best
show in town, a kind of special effects demonstration of controlled
destruction.
While some reminisced over the loss of a historical landmark, others could
hardly wait for the once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.
With a sound like fourth of July fireworks, the dynamite sticks exploded,
and the Jefferson's walls came tumbling down..."
